Week 16 – CST499 Fall 2025 Capstone – Learning Journal Final Entry

As we reach the conclusion of the Computer Science Online program, looking over my journals from the past two years allow me to see my academic and personal growth. When I began the program, my primary focus was learning technical concepts. Over time, I learned that success in computer science also depends on persistence, ethical awareness, and collaboration. Courses that emphasized teamwork and reflection taught me how to listen to others, resolve conflicts, and contribute meaningfully in group settings.

The technical coursework strengthened my foundation as a software engineer. Classes such as Software Design, Operating Systems, Computer Network, Database Systems, and Software Engineering challenged me to apply object-oriented principles, design secure and reliable systems, and understand how software moves from development to deployment.

Service learning in CST462S further expanded my perspective by allowing me to contribute to open-source software, helping reduce the digital divide while gaining hands-on experience with real world development issues.

Lastly, the Capstone project brought together everything I learned throughout the program. Working with a client, collaborating with our team, and contributing to documentation and testing closely resembled a professional software development environment. As I move forward, I plan to continue building my portfolio, strengthening my technical skills, and pursuing opportunities in software engineering.

Week 8 – CST – 300 Module 8 OLI – Post-Test This week we had to take the post-test which was a culmination of what we have learned throughout the course. It started off with opinion questions where you had to choose whether you agreed or disagreed with the statement. I compared my answers to the pre-test answers and, although they are not graded, I believe my answers improved. From the OLI modules, I learned that you must consider everyone’s opinions and to use conflict resolution techniques when there is difference of opinions. What are some important differences between the two? Some important differences between database tables and spreadsheets are the way data is formatted and how data is stored.   Week 6 – CST370 – Design and Analysis of Algorithms This week we learned about AVL trees, 2-3 trees, heap, and hashing. An AVL tree is a binary search tree that has a balance factor for each node that is either 0, 1, or -1. This means that the height of a node’s left subtree minus the height of the node’s right subtree must be either 0, 1, or -1. When inserting a new node into an AVL tree, you must recheck that the balance factor of each node is still within range. If the tree is unbalanced, you must perform either right, left, double right left, or double left right rotations to balance the tree.
